About Staithes

A small fishing village eleven miles north of Whitby, Staithes is a maze of cobbled streets and higgledy-piggledy houses overlooking the harbour. The village has three friendly pubs, a seafront chippy, an award winning restaurant - the Endeavour. The Seadrift café on the harbour front sells delicious homemade soups and cakes.

The sheltered harbour has a small beach and lots of rock pools to explore when the tide goes out. The fossil hunting is known to be especially good after a storm. The light is wonderful and fishermen still moor their boats in the Beck.

The Cleveland way passes through the village and the beach at Runswick Bay is a three mile walk along the cliff tops. Sandsend (9 miles) is another beautiful village with a picture-postcard sandy beach.

The Staithes Gallery

The village of Staithes has always been and still is a magnet for art and artists.

The aim at Staithes Gallery is to provide a showcase right in the heart of the old village for the very best contemporary artwork inspired by Staithes and the surrounding area. Regualr exhibitions reflect the quality and variety of art stimulated by this most inspirational of villages. The Gallery regularly holds art classes and residential courses.

	Coastal walks and Fossil hunting The coast around Staithes is both visually stunning and is renowned for fossil hunting. There is a good chance that you will find something interesting, especially after a storm To find out more about the 'Dinosaur coast' and some guided walks and fossil activities for kids, visit the dinosaur coast project.
	Cleveland way The Cleveland way walk passes in front of the cottage. You don't have to do it all, but this site gives you some idea of the fantastic walks that are possible from the Cottage.
	North York Moors National Park Staithes sits in the North York Moors National Park. Lots to see and do in God's own county.
	North Yorks Moor Railway Classic steam engines run on the nearby North Yorks Moor Railway. The Hogwart's express line from Harry Potter was filmed on the NYMR, as it traversed the stunning North Yorks Moors. Well worth a day out.

	The Staithes and Runswick lifeboat The local lifeboat is just along from the house. The lifeboat is celebrated each year on lifeboat weekend in July. Its well worth a visit for this alone, although the cottage is likely to be booked already.
	Whitby Goth Festival Whitby is the setting for Bram Stoker's Dracula, and the gothic tradition is celebrated by sallow youths and middle aged Goths who haven't yet lost interest in their Sisters of Mercy records. The Whitby Goth festival happens twice a year, and is the highlight of the Whitby cultural calendar.
